June Event Recap

Well… June was a sad month. We lost our beloved Cheeky. But we also did a lot of good.

The Heeaia restoration ended up getting cancelled and we will be rescheduling for a later date.

For the DLNR Trail Clearing, Rosie was the only one from HIC in attendance but it was a fantastic day. They spent roughly 5 hours doing hard labor in the mountains clearing a trail that gets very overgrown and dangerous for trail users. It was in cooperation with the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Na Ala Hele division (a partner of HIC’s).

There were three groups situated at different points and starting at different times. Ours met in Maunawili near the trail-head at 10:30 am. Around 12 of us jumped in to the DLNR truck and we proceeded to drive in on state land to a secret access point. This was great because the trail is 9.3 miles one direction and I wasn’t sure how we were going to get to the center of it without hiking. But after a short drive in, then a 45 minute hike or so we made it to the center where we began working. We split in to groups of 3-5 and raked, weed-whacked, macheted and clipped all invasive species while taking care not to kill native plants. This was a substantial effort done by love of trail running, and the best part was… the next day, we got to RUN the entire trail, both out and back for a fun 22 miler / birthday party!

It was fun being able to interact with work partners as well and get to know them personally outside of the office. And boy was Rosie jealous of their jobs… getting to play outside all day and clear trails.
